After years of construction, the Shimao Wonderland InterContinental is set to open this October about 20 miles southwest of Shanghai.
Built into an abandoned quarry the Intercontinental hotel will feature underwater floors and a green rooftop that blends into the countryside. The design of the hotel takes advantage of the surrounding area such as cliffs, waterfalls, and hills. A glass-enclosed waterfall pours over the hotels 18 floors above the water.
The underground floors will include guestrooms and a restaurant that faces a 33-foot deep aquarium, plus an area where guests can enjoy a swimming pool as well as other water sports. The hotel’s roof is at ground level and is covered with greenery such as trees and grass to match the surrounding land and preserve the landscape as well. There will be a sports center over the quarry for activities such as bungee jumping and rock climbing.
The hotel was designed by the Atkins Group, the same Architect that designed the famous Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
I think this is a new exciting step for the hotel industry!
