That’s it, lights out for the mini shampoo bottles at all Marriott properties around the world. Marriott, one of the world’s largest hotel companies announced that they will be eliminating the small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel from their guestrooms by December 2020. The mini bottles that we all take home with us from our stay will be replaced with larger bottles or wall-mounted dispensers. Element Hotels already eliminated mini bottles and have wall-mounted dispensers. This move follows a similar move made by IHG which owns Crowne Plaza and the well known Holiday Inn. They announced that they will eliminate about 200 million bottles each year by 2021. Last year Walt Disney Co. said they will replace their bottles at its resorts and cruise line. Smaller brands and properties are following the plan as well. Marriott has already begun the process with some of their brands including Courtyard and Fairfield Hotels.
Marriott has wanted to eliminate small bottles for years, President and CEO Arne Sorenson said. There are just too many of them, and they’re difficult to recycle because of the time it takes to clean them out.
It took a lot of work to design tamper-resistant large bottles and get suppliers on board. High-end hotels, in particular, needed to have bottles that still felt luxurious, he said.
“There were a lot of technical features to this that we had to get right,” Sorenson said.
Marriott has been getting positive feedback with their changes.
This is good for the environment. Keep it up, Marriott!
